Mike Tyson is amongst the very few athletes who need no introduction to the masses. The former heavyweight boxing champion has seen incredible heights such as knocking out 44 of his opponents and winning the WBA, IBF, and WBC heavyweight titles amongst many accolades in his career. However, there have been several lows such as losing his childhood coach Cus D’Amato, the r*pe conviction, and the Buster Douglas KO. But, nothing compares to the death of his daughter Exodus Tyson.
While the exact date of her birth is not available, as per several reports, Exodus was born in March of 2005. Her world-famous father, Mike Tyson had announced his retirement in the same year too after losing successive bouts to Danny Williams and Kevin McBride, both via stoppages. Tyson, who had the reputation of being a hot-head, was naturally upset to be finishing his career on a losing note.
However, at the time, Tyson did have a stable personal life. He was in a relationship with Sol Xochitl. According to a report from TUKO, she is a former stripper of Mexican descent. Apparently, they met at a strip club in Phoenix, Arizona in the early 2000s. However, at the time of their relationship, Tyson was in a debt of $27 million, according to New York Times.
Despite that, they shared a good bond and together, they parented two children. Their eldest, Miguel Tyson was born on April 18, 2002, and their youngest, the late Exodus Tyson, was born in March 2005. However, the family got torn apart when Exodus passed away in 2009.
How did Exodus Tyson pass away?
At the time of her death, Exodus was merely 4 years old. On the fateful day of May 26, 2009, Exodus was reportedly playing on a treadmill, which was switched off. However, the infant accidentally tied the cord of the machine to her neck. It was her elder brother Miguel who discovered her before her mother Sol Xochitl untied the cord.
She immediately contacted 911 for help and the medics performed CPR on her and rushed her to the hospital. As soon as Mike Tyson got the wind of what really happened, he flew in from Las Vegas. Unfortunately, Exodus could not be saved as she took her last breath on May 27, 2009.
What did Mike Tyson say about the passing of his daughter?
Burying a child is perhaps the hardest thing that one can ask of a parent. However, Tyson had to bid his daughter farewell in May 2009 after the tragic accident which took his daughter Exodus Tyson’s life. Tyson was unconsolable at the time and went under severe mental stress. But, Tyson did have the courage to speak publicly as he had an exclusive interview with Oprah Winfrey.
He added, “From all my experience in rehab, I took responsibility. She had to be buried, she had to be taken care of…. There was no animosity. There was no anger towards anybody. I don’t know how she died and I don’t want to know… If I know somebody’s to blame for it, there will be a problem.” (h/t via Daily Mail)
