John Goodridge, who spends countless hours just watching whales, was lucky enough to witness the impressive jump of a giant humpback whale in the middle of the ocean off Sydney Heads, New South Wales, Australia on June 24.

The photo, taken by his amateur lens, shows the humpback whale, which measures 9 meters in length, charging just before the tourist boat turned back to shore. Therefore, only a few lucky people, including John, witnessed this magical 2-second moment.

Responding to the Long Room newspaper, Mr. John excitedly recounted: “There were about 70 people on the boat who came there with the purpose of watching the whale. We had to go out to sea and wait for 2 hours until the boat returned to shore. It was a surprise when the humpback whale suddenly rose high out of the water and performed an amazing vertical jump. Whales always jump sideways but this whale jumped in a perfect straight line. I have never seen anything like it before.”

Every year from April to November, pods of humpback whales make the 10,000km journey from Antarctica to Australia to mate and give birth. So the East Australian Strait is an ideal place to see these magnificent animals in the summer. The humpback whale is estimated to weigh more than 20 tonnes, measure 9 metres long, and is an adult whale. According to Mr. John, at such close distances, the size of an adult whale compared to the ship shows how small humans really are.

The phenomenon of whales rising to the surface of the water occurs frequently for this mammal species. Many times people have been overwhelmed by the sight of fish weighing up to tons jumping on the shimmering water like the pictures below.

One theory is that this massive creature leaps high out of the water for no reason other than joy.

If there are many swimming together, once one whale jumps, the others will follow.
