Just when Laila D’Souza was about to take a break from animal rescuing, a message came in about a tiny four-week-old kitten in need of help.
A resident spotted the kitten lingering outside their apartment building, all alone. After looking into it, they discovered he’d been abandoned by a neighbor who no longer wanted him. Laila couldn’t bear to leave the kitten to fend for himself, so she welcomed him into her care.
“He went from meowing frantically to purring nonstop once he knew he was safe,” Laila told Love Meow.
During the ride to his foster home, Toby (the kitten) never had a quiet moment, screaming at the top of his lungs from the carrier. But his demeanor swiftly changed as soon as Laila brought him into his new room, complete with everything he needed to feel at home.
After exploring his new digs, Toby made a beeline for his foster mom while revving his purr engine on high.
Laila began treating Toby’s stomach issues, which had been troubling him. He was underweight, though it was hard to tell under his fluffy coat. With medication, he regained his appetite and strength, devouring his food as he tried to make up for lost meals.
Toby put on some much-needed weight and was finally on the mend.
It didn’t take long for his personality to shine through. Having lived alone outside, he craved closeness with his people, determined never to be alone again. “He loves all the attention he can get.”
“Now, whenever he sees me from a distance, he starts purring. He’s such an affectionate, playful kitten.”
Already a love bug, Toby likes to rest his paws on Laila’s leg and gaze up at her with wide-eyed wonder. He watches and listens intently, never loosening his grip, as if to ensure Laila isn’t going anywhere.
He is always up for anything and never complains when his foster mom gives him additional care.
For the first two weeks, Laila lavished attention on Toby, reassuring him he was loved. Now that he’s feeling much better, a gentle canine companion is eagerly waiting to meet him. “I’m so excited to introduce him to my dog, Leya.”
Toby clings to his foster mom, eventually dozing off with his paws still on her knee.
Toby may be tiny, but he has a big voice and isn’t afraid to use it. He cries out whenever Laila enters the room, demanding her immediate attention. With his expressive personality, he looks like a little animated character.
While he screams for his foster mom, his purr motor never stops rumbling.
Toby has a lot to say.
After more than two weeks of excellent care, Toby’s stomach issues have subsided. With his health back, his energy levels are soaring. He’s still a small boy but has the spirit of a lion.
Thanks to the timely rescue, Toby has found a second chance at life. Now, he enjoys endless food, soft blankets for snuggling, and warm laps to curl up in.
