Lionel Messi took to social media to send a message to fans after Inter Miami’s 5-0 win over Olimpia in Honduras.
Messi made a notable move on Instagram after the friendly match, where he scored the opening goal from an assist by Luis Suarez. The 37-year-old legend also contributed two assists in a row, helping Inter Miami to a big 5-0 victory. After the match, Messi expressed his gratitude to the people of Honduras for welcoming his team.
Messi captioned his post: “Accumulating extra minutes of preparation… Thanks for everything, Honduras!!”
It was an old story, but it never got old — a brilliant performance from the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner. Messi was the orchestrator of every move in the attacking zone, scoring and assisting before half-time. He impressed in every aspect and made everything look easy, while turning Olimpia’s defense into reluctant “apprentices.” But the most remarkable thing was the team spirit: Messi didn’t play for himself, he played for the team.
Inter Miami are preparing for the 2025 MLS season, hoping to improve on their 2024 performance, when they were unexpectedly eliminated early in the MLS Cup playoffs despite winning the Supporters’ Shield. The win over Olimpia marks Miami’s fourth friendly this year, following matches against Club America, Universitario and Sporting San Miguelito in Nevada (USA), Peru and Panama respectively.
Inter Miami’s 2025 MLS regular season kicks off on February 22 when they host New York City FC at Chase Stadium. Before that, however, the team will play its final friendly against Florida in-state rival Orlando City at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa on Valentine’s Day.
